Learning through service – an experiment
In the fall semester of 2009, my students offered their precious time to develop a web-based system for a Non-profit organization. I helped students from my web programming class to get first-hand experience on requirements gathering for an information system. The project was divided into four teams which handled different modules of the project. My job which I did over my winter vacation was to rewrite the code in a content management system and put those modules together. Joomla was chosen as content management system since the non-profit organization had a special request for a multi-user supported website that are fairly easy to manage and update.
Students were really glad that they got real world experience in building this information system. Non-profit staff are excited to have this new tool to improve their communication and voluntary efforts.
